FASHION IS NOT JUST CLOTHES

PH SOURCE: MYSHOWROOMBLOG.ES

During lunch hour I stumbled upon an interesting article written in the Danish popular fashion magazine – Costume, which had an emphasis on the tempo that we currently have in our lives. That suddenly our lives revolve around checking constantly our email, looking too much into social media, working longer hours and taking very hasty decisions on what we put in our mouths and in what we buy. All due to, lack of time and if I must add – the new generation.
It’s true and I cannot disagree at all. I spend more than 10 hours online in front of the computer and some more on social media. I can’t complain, don’t take me wrong. Fortunately the job did not chose me, I chose it instead. Has my everyday routine suddenly turned into a time span of 5 seconds like scientists claim? Not really. Most of what I do is research and that takes its good time.
Has work mode and life in general taken a toll on how I make my decisions? No, not really. It has in fact changed it completely. The reason why i – we – enjoy so much what we do, it’s because of all the stories behind every single collection. How in each season, ideas flow daily and the same are turned into reality. The passion and commitment a designer puts into his or her work its rather breathtaking. Nothing in slow fashion is done hastily.
Speaking generally, we have gone used to fast fashion, fast food – fast encounters? Is it lack of time, lack of patience or just plain lack of interest that drives us everyday into the high street stores ? As I like to call it, supermarket racks. We literally make decisions on purchasing clothes that last some good 3 washes, that have a significant negative impact on the environment and I did not want to mention this because it is rather a touchy subject, but the fact that the ‘supermarkets’ re-create whole looks straight from the runways?
But hey, its how they do things, its how they chose to drive their businesses. So I’m minding my own. I love finding new brands, new designers where I literally go ‘wow’ the whole time, feel the high quality of each piece, the flawless finishes, the attention to details that make a garment unique and special. I think its priceless to ‘stop’ and enjoy what slow fashion can really provide us. And that is, timeless happiness.
